In rare cases, translation in eukaryotes can be initiated from codons other than AUG. A well documented case (including direct protein sequencing) is the GUG start of a ribosomal P protein of the fungus Candida Candida albicans 1) and the GUG initiation in mammalian NAT1 2). Other examples can be found in the following references 3). The standard code currently allows initiation from UUG and CUG in addition to AUG.
